fudzilla logo XFX HD 4890 Black Edition 1GHz is out and about. and we scored some pictures of it. The card, along with Sapphire’s Atomic, is the first 1GHz clocked card on the market. As our Toxic is stuck at customs and Black XFX is on the way, we are quite sure that there will be plenty of 1GHz cards to read about.

XFX First to Use Premium Reference Design for Radeon HD 4770

April 30, 2009 by Cabro · Leave a Comment

XFX continues to show enthusiasm with its ATI Radeon line of products, by coming up with the first Radeon HD 4770 accelerator for the market to use the premium reference design for Radeon HD 4770 (model: XFX 4770ST D5 512MB). AMD had come up with two choices of coolers for its partners. Most of them choose the one which is more cost-effective, so the sales margins could be improved in an already tight pricing-segment.

XFX used the premium reference-design cooler and PCB, with a major difference that it comes in black instead of red. XFX has so far had a knack of trying as hard as it can, to color its cards black. The company did so with the Radeon HD 4870 reference design accelerator recently. This card retains the reference clock speeds of 750 MHz (core), and 800 MHz (memory). Given that XFX chose the more expensive parts in making this card, it will pass on the premium to the consumer, making it slightly more expensive than the reference design cards in its league.

XFX HD 4890 XXX 1GB PCIe Graphics Card Review

April 2, 2009 by Cabro · Leave a Comment

XFX are a manufacturer not traditionally associated with ATI so when I was asked to review the latest ATI card, the 4890,  I was surprised to hear it was from XFX. Not only that but this card is a XXX edition! The guys from Hong Kong certainly don’t do things by halves! With a full line up of ATI products also under their umbrella (XFX ATI roundup coming soon), XFX will hopefully add to the impressive reputation they gained by being a major manufacturer for Nvidia products.

First things first, I’m afraid ATI have not reduced the fabrication down to 40nm with this card. Instead the card is still based on the 55nm architecture of its sister card the 4870. However there have been tweaks made to the power circuitry allowing ATI to increase the clockspeeds significantly. 1GB of GDDR5 also makes a showing which should ensure that the memory can keep pace with the GPU. XFX being XFX though were not happy with the stock clockspeed on the GPU and bumped it up to 900MHz on the core.

The HD4800 core has an updated design with AMD adding decoupling capacitors to reduce signal noise. This does however, give a very minor increase ito the die area. The whole processor has been re-timed and the ASIC power distribution has also been tweaked to improve efficiency of the 4890. This, along with the decaps has allowed ATI to increase the clockspeeds of their GPU without the need for a die shrink just yet.

The HD 4890 has another trick up it’s sleeve too with DirectX 10.1. While this is a minor update to DX10, DX10.1 gives game developers better control over image quality amd more flexibility with some existing features of DX10 such as cube map arrays and independent blending modes. These features are best displayed with the DirectX 10.1 game – HAWX, which is included with the XFX 4890XXX.

With a stock core speed of 850 MHz, and the added tweak giving a speed of 900MHz, the HD4890 XXX is a mere 100MHz off the Golden 1GHz speed, something I hope to hit later in the review in the overclocking section.

So, with the card hitting some blistering speeds and priced at a competitive £240, the HD4890 is shaping up quite nicely in anticipation of Nvidia’s GTX275 release, due out today if reports are to be believed. We will keep you posted on how the two compare in the very near future.

elitebastards logo XFX Radeon HD 4870 XXX 1GB Video Card Review

In recent times we’ve taken a look at a couple of boards from XFX’s new range of ATI-powered graphics boards, both representing different facets of their line-up.  On the one hand we had the custom cooled, factory overclocked Radeon HD 4850 XXX, while on the other there was the reference cooled and clocked Radeon HD 4870 X2.

Today’s review takes in a graphics board which sits between these two parts in terms of both performance and what XFX bring to the table, going down the same factory overclocked route as the Radeon HD 4850 XXX but retaining AMD’s reference cooling solution as per the Radeon HD 4870 X2.

The part we’re talking about is the Radeon HD 4870 XXX 1GB, and if you want to know more then it’s time to turn the page and proceed to read our comprehensive review!

XFX Geforce 9800 GTX+ Black Edition Review

tweak news logo XFX Geforce 9800 GTX+ Black Edition Review

Overall, to say I am impressed with XFX’s tweaked version of the 9800GTX+ would be an understatement. It handles all the recent games with relative ease all while under very tough image quality and resolution settings and all for a price of around US$189. Couple in the fact that you get one or even two quality recent games with the package and you have a purchase that will perform right out of the box.

legit reviews logo PNY & XFX GeForce GTX 285 Video Card Reviews

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 video card proves to be a step in the right direction for NVIDIA in taming power consumption. The 55nm revision has enabled higher efficiency and increased overclocking overhead while still keeping thermals in check. I suspect in the near future we’ll see a few GeForce GTX 285s with lighter coolers and 3rd party PCBs to cut costs. The two cards reviewed today, the PNY GeForce GTX 285 and the XFX GeForce GTX 285 Black Edition, both consistently beat the PNY GeForce GTX 280 used for testing…

XFX GeForce GTX 260 XXX Edition Review

June 24, 2008 by Cabro · Leave a Comment

tweaktown logo XFX GeForce GTX 260 XXX Edition Review

When a new graphics card comes out, I tend to do the TweakTown review and then have a look around and see what some other reviewers thought of the card. However, I’ve been so busy lately with the new release of the HD 4800 series from AMD and the GTX 280 from NVIDIA that I haven’t had a chance to check out any other GTX 200 series reviews.

What I have mostly seen, though, is that the majority of GTX 260 reviews floating around the internet are just the standard NVIDIA model, which is a bit boring. Today we’ll be looking at the XFX offering, and not just some stock clocked XFX offering, but a full tilt XXX version which has some clocks to get excited about.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the GTX 260 fairs in this extremely competitive graphics card market, and hopefully its cheaper price tag can win us over. The graphics card market has never been this hot before, and while AMD are fighting the good fight to take the market share crown back, NVIDIA is battling them off with sticks at the moment.

Before we get into the GTX 260, let’s see what XFX have managed to do with the package and the clock speeds on the card.

Attack of the Blacks: XFX GeForce 9800 GTX/GX2 Black Edition

May 30, 2008 by Cabro · Leave a Comment

vr zone logo1 Attack of the Blacks: XFX GeForce 9800 GTX/GX2 Black Edition

Although it has been less than two months since the launch of NVIDIA’s G92-based GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB and GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB cards, the retail market has been flooded with competitively priced stock GeForce 9800 GTX and GeForce 9800 GX2, as well as overclocked editions of both cards as various manufacturers attempt to out-do each other be it in pricing or in performance.

What we have in our labs are XFX’s most coveted and nimble graphics cards, the XFX GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB Black Edition and the XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB Black Edition. The former clocks in at 760MHz (which is just a little shy of 100MHz faster than a stock card), while the latter clocks 700MHz (which is 100MHz over a stock GX2). According to XFX, only a limited number of these cards are produced, giving them a little more elite and rare status.

In addition to the speed boost, everyone is entitled to some exclusive Black Edition perks. Dedicated XFX LiveHelp is free by buying one of these macho men if you’re a U.S. customer. Not to worry, customers from the rest of the world still get priority LiveHelp.

XFX 9800GTX Black Edition Review

May 26, 2008 by Cabro · Leave a Comment

motherboards org XFX 9800GTX Black Edition Review

Motherboards.org takes a look at the XFX 9800GTX Black Edition.

XFX has become a household name in the PC industry and they have taken major strides to become a worldwide player in the VGA and motherboard game. They have market shares just about everywhere and have begun to really expand their sales across the globe. XFX started out slinging VGA cards, but as NVIDIA has grown into the motherboard arena they have followed suite and started making motherboards on the latest chipset offerings from them as well.

Recently there have been many releases of new NVIDIA based products to hit the market and almost every few weeks we have seen a new product hit the shelves as NVIDIA ramps up their battle not only against other VGA companies, but takes the battle to Intel to boot. NVIDIA plays hardball that is their game and like it or not they have made major strides in knocking their opponents off the field, but taking on Intel is like taking a big bite of a sandwich and hard to swallow as Intel as well knows the game and plays for keeps.

XFX 8800GTS 512MB Alpha Dog Edition Review

This is a great time to be a consumer looking for a new graphics card. Over the last few weeks we have been inundated with new cards from every quarter which have all been firmly focused at the more budget-minded enthusiast. With the release of the G92-based 8800GT, Nvidia released what some punters are calling the most popular graphics card of all time. Even though it was popular, the 8800GT proved to be next to impossible to find due to some serious supply shortages and the prices skyrocketed above the original MSRP. Finally, the shortages of this card seem to have ended….just in time for another new release from Nvidia: the G92-based 8800GTS 512MB. Or as I like to call it: “yes, another 8800GTS”.

While the 8800GT was aimed at offering a massive amount of performance for every one of your hard earned dollars, Nvidia is hoping their new 8800GTS will appeal to consumers looking for something with a little more power at a little higher price. Basically, what Nvidia is looking to do with this card is increase their lead over ATI’s recently released HD3870 which (like the 8800GT) is selling faster than they can be produced. There have been a few changes made to this card to differentiate it from the GT but we will get into that a little later. At this point, it is sufficient to say that Nvidia a firing on all cylinders these days and I have high expectations for this card. Something that also sets Nvidia apart from the competition is the sheer number of their board partners that offer lifetime warranties. Unlike the HD3870 launch where you would have had a snowball’s chance in hell to find an ATI card with a lifetime warranty, there will be quite a few manufacturers offering lifetime warranties on their 8800GTS 512MB cards.

Now that we have all that out of the way, let’s talk a bit about the availability of these new 8800GTS 512MB cards. Unfortunately, we are not hearing much out of our usual contacts but that could mean one of two things: either they have plenty of stock and are not panicking or have already hung themselves from the nearest doorframe rather than going through another 8800GT-like launch. Personally, I think that stock will be a bit tight due to popularity but not to the extent like we saw with the 8800GT. Pricing will pretty much run the gamut and these cards will be priced between $360-$400 CAD which represents about a $100 increase in price from the GT. Meanwhile, the XFX 8800GTS 512MB Alpha Dog Edition we are reviewing today comes in at a pretty trim $374.99 or thereabouts.
